How to Use the Downloader App

Downloader is the simplest way to get files onto a Fire TV or Android TV device. Here is how to install it, use it and fix the problems people run into.

Fire TV and most Android TV devices do not come with a web browser that can download and install files. Downloader, a free app made by the technology site AFTVnews, fills that gap. You type an address, it downloads the file and offers to install it. It is the standard tool for installing apps that are not in the Appstore, and it is available directly in the Amazon Appstore and Google Play Store.

Install Downloader

On Fire TV

  1. From the home screen, select Find (the magnifying glass), then Search.
  2. Type Downloader and select it from the suggestions.
  3. Choose the app with the orange icon, published by AFTVnews, and select Get or Download.

On Android TV and Google TV

  1. Open the Google Play Store on the TV.
  2. Search for Downloader by AFTVnews and install it.

Before it can install anything, Downloader needs permission to install apps. On Fire TV, follow our Developer Options guide. On Google TV, see sideloading on Google TV.

Download a file

1 Home BrowserFilesSettings Enter a URL or code: app.livenettv.mn/fire Go Type the address No need for https://livenettv.mn 2 Live NetTV Do you want to install this app? Cancel Install Choose Install Then Done, and delete the filelivenettv.mn
Type the address, press Go, then choose Install when the download finishes.
  1. Open Downloader. Allow its request to access files if asked.
  2. On the Home tab, select the address box.
  3. Type the full web address, for example app.livenettv.mn/fire. You do not need to type https://.
  4. Select Go. The download starts and shows its progress.
  5. When it finishes, Downloader opens the installer automatically. Choose Install.
  6. After installing, choose Done, then Delete to remove the file and save space.
Tip: Typing with a remote is slow. Downloader's on-screen keyboard has a .com key and remembers past addresses. You can also use the Fire TV or Google TV phone app as a keyboard.

Short codes

Downloader also accepts short numeric codes. A code is a shortcut that AFTVnews links to a longer address, so you type a few digits instead of a full URL. Codes are convenient, but anyone can create one, and they can point anywhere. Use codes only from sources you trust, and check the address Downloader shows before installing.

The built-in browser

Downloader includes a basic web browser on the Browser tab. You can visit a website and select a download link, and Downloader handles the file in the same way. It is useful when you do not know a direct address. Be careful on sites with many adverts, which often disguise ads as download buttons.

Manage downloaded files

Open the Files tab to see everything you have downloaded. Select a file to install it again, or press the Menu button on the remote to delete it. Leftover files are one of the main reasons Fire TV storage fills up, so clear this list now and then.

Useful settings

Under Downloader's Settings tab:

  • Automatically open downloaded files — keep this on so the installer opens straight away.
  • Delete APK files after installation — turn this on to save storage automatically.
  • Enable JavaScript — needed for some websites in the built-in browser.

Fixing common errors

“Could not connect to server” or nothing happens after Go

Check the address for typing mistakes, especially letters that look alike such as l and 1. Then check your internet connection in another app.

The file downloads but will not install

Downloader needs the Install unknown apps permission. See the Developer Options guide. If the install starts and then fails, make sure you downloaded the build for your device.

“There was a problem parsing the package”

The download was interrupted or incomplete. Delete it from the Files tab and try again.

“Insufficient storage”

Free some space first. See how to free up storage on a Firestick.

Frequently asked questions

Is Downloader safe?

Yes. Downloader is published by AFTVnews, a long-running Fire TV news site, and is distributed through the official Amazon Appstore and Google Play Store. As with any download tool, the safety of what you install depends on where the file comes from.

Does Downloader cost anything?

No. It is free. An optional donation version exists, but the free version has every feature you need.

Can I use a different app instead of Downloader?

Yes. File managers such as X-plore or FX File Explorer can also download and install files. Downloader is simply the easiest to use with a remote.
