A factory reset erases every app, setting and account from a Fire TV or Android TV device and reinstalls a clean copy of its system. It fixes problems nothing else will, such as constant crashes, a device that has slowed to a crawl, or settings you cannot undo. It is also what you should do before selling or giving away a device. Because it deletes everything, it should be the last fix you try, not the first.
Before you reset
- Try the simpler fixes first. A restart, clearing app caches and freeing storage solve most problems. See speeding up a slow Firestick and freeing up storage.
- Make a list of your apps, especially ones you installed from outside the app store, so you can reinstall them.
- Have your passwords ready: Wi-Fi, your Amazon or Google account, and the streaming services you use.
- Keep the device plugged in. A power cut during a reset can leave it unable to start.
Reset a Fire TV from the menu
- Open Settings, then My Fire TV (on older models, Device).
- Select Reset to Factory Defaults.
- Enter your PIN if you have one set, then choose Reset.
- The device restarts and takes between 5 and 15 minutes. Do not unplug it.
Reset a Fire TV with the remote shortcut
If the menus will not open or the screen freezes, use the shortcut instead:
- Press and hold Back and the Right side of the navigation ring together for 10 seconds.
- A reset prompt appears on screen. Choose OK to continue, or wait, as it starts automatically after a few seconds.
Reset a Google TV or Android TV device
- Open Settings, then System.
- Select About › Factory reset. On some older Android TV boxes the path is Device Preferences › Reset.
- Confirm with Factory reset › Erase everything.
Some TV boxes also have a small reset hole, pressed with a pin while powering on. Check your box's manual, because the button combination differs between makers.
What gets deleted and what stays
| Deleted | Kept |
|---|---|
| All apps you installed, including sideloaded ones | The system software and its latest updates |
| Your sign-ins, Wi-Fi passwords and settings | Purchases tied to your account, such as apps and films, which you can reinstall |
| Downloads, cached data and APK files | The device's registration to your account if you sign in again with it |
| Remote pairings for extra controllers | The main remote usually re-pairs during set-up |
Setting up again afterwards
- Choose your language and connect to Wi-Fi.
- Sign in with your Amazon or Google account.
- Let the device install any pending updates before adding apps.
- Reinstall your apps. For apps from outside the store, re-enable installs from unknown sources first. See Fire TV Developer Options or sideloading on Google TV, then use our install guides.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a factory reset take?
Usually 5 to 15 minutes for the reset itself, plus time for updates afterwards. Leave the device plugged in the whole time.
Will a reset remove a virus or adware?
A factory reset removes apps you installed, including unwanted ones, so it clears most adware. Afterwards, install apps only from trusted sources. See how to spot fake APKs.
Do I need to deregister before selling my Fire TV?
Yes. Reset it, and also remove it from your Amazon account under your account's devices page, so the new owner can register it to theirs.
