Parental Controls on Fire TV and Google TV

A PIN on the TV stops children opening apps, buying things or watching rated content. Here is how to switch it on, what it covers, and what it does not.

Both Fire TV and Google TV have built-in parental controls, but they work differently. Fire TV uses one PIN for the whole device. Google TV uses separate kids' profiles with their own app list. This guide covers both.

Turn on Parental Controls, enter your PIN, then choose what needs the PIN: purchases, app launches and rated content.

Fire TV: turn on Parental Controls

  1. Go to Settings › Preferences › Parental Controls.
  2. Select Parental Controls to switch them On.
  3. Enter your Prime Video PIN. If you have never set one, set it first at amazon.com/pin (the PIN is tied to your Amazon account, not the device).
  4. Choose what to protect, as in the table below.
SettingWhat it does
PIN Protect PurchasesAsks for the PIN before buying apps, rentals or in-app items
Viewing RestrictionsSets the age rating that needs a PIN in Prime Video and supported apps
PIN Protect App LaunchesAsks for the PIN before opening any app, including sideloaded apps
PIN Protect Amazon Photos AppLocks the photos app separately
Tip: PIN Protect App Launches is the setting that covers Live NetTV and other sideloaded apps. Viewing Restrictions only applies inside apps that support Amazon's ratings.

Google TV and Google TV Streamer: add a kids' profile

  1. On the home screen, select your profile icon, then Add a kid.
  2. Pick the apps for the child's home screen. Only those apps appear on their profile. A kids profile does not need its own Google Account.
  3. Set screen time limits, content ratings and a profile lock, so a PIN is needed to leave the kids profile.

Sideloaded apps are hidden from a kids' profile unless you add them. Setting up a new streamer? Our Google TV Streamer guide covers profiles during setup.

Android TV boxes

Older Android TV boxes without Google TV usually have a Restricted profile under Settings › Device Preferences › Security & restrictions. It works like a kids' profile: you choose which apps it can open and set a PIN to leave it.

What parental controls cannot do

  • They do not filter channels inside an app that has no rating system. Lock the whole app instead.
  • They do not block a factory reset. A child who resets the device removes the PIN, along with everything else.
  • Router-level controls (time limits, content filters) are a stronger second layer for the whole home.

Forgot the PIN?

On Fire TV, reset it at amazon.com/pin; the device picks up the new PIN in a few minutes. On Google TV, choose Forgot PIN on the lock screen and enter the parent's Google Account password.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Fire TV PIN the same as my Amazon password?

No. It is a separate 5-digit Prime Video PIN that you set at amazon.com/pin.

Can I lock just one app on Fire TV?

Not individually. PIN Protect App Launches covers all apps except Amazon's own. On Google TV, a kids' profile lets you choose exactly which apps appear.

Do parental controls slow the device down?

No. They only add a PIN prompt; performance is unaffected.
