Fire TV "Connected, No Internet": How to Fix It

The Wi-Fi icon says connected, but nothing loads. This usually comes down to the router, the device's network settings or its clock. Work through these fixes in order.

"Connected, no internet" means your Fire TV has joined your Wi-Fi network but cannot reach the internet through it. The connection between the stick and the router is fine. The problem is somewhere after that: in the router, in the network settings the stick received, or in something on the stick that stops secure connections from working. The good news is that it is almost always fixable in a few minutes.

The three fixes that solve most cases: check the status, restart the router properly, and set a public DNS.

First, check what the Fire TV sees

  1. Go to Settings › Network.
  2. Highlight your network and press the Play/Pause button on the remote.
  3. The status screen shows whether the stick is connected to the router and whether it can reach the internet, plus the signal strength and IP address.

If it says Connected to the router but not to the internet, carry on with the fixes below. If your phone on the same Wi-Fi cannot load anything either, the problem is your router or internet provider, not the Fire TV. Skip straight to fix 2.

Fix 1: Restart the Fire TV

Hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds until the screen goes dark, or go to Settings › My Fire TV › Restart. A restart gets a fresh network address from the router and clears stuck connections.

Fix 2: Restart the router the right way

Unplug the router (and the modem, if it is a separate box) from the power. Wait a full 30 seconds, then plug it back in and wait about two minutes until all its lights are steady. Restart the Fire TV once the router is back. Pressing a router's reset button is not the same thing. That erases its settings, so do not do it unless you mean to.

Fix 3: Forget the network and join again

  1. Go to Settings › Network.
  2. Highlight your network, press the Menu button (three lines) and choose Forget.
  3. Select the network again and re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully.

This clears saved settings that may be out of date, for example after your router was replaced or its settings changed.

Fix 4: Check the date and time

Secure websites and apps refuse to connect if the device clock is wrong. Fire TV sets its time automatically from the internet, but a long power cut can leave it confused. Go to Settings › Preferences › Time Zone and make sure your correct time zone is chosen, then restart the device.

Fix 5: Set a public DNS

DNS is the service that turns website names into addresses. If your router's DNS is slow or broken, the Fire TV connects to Wi-Fi but cannot find anything on the internet. The cleanest fix is to change DNS on your router, which helps every device. You can also set it on the Fire TV itself:

  1. Go to Settings › Network, highlight your network, press Menu and choose Forget.
  2. Select the network again, enter the password, then choose Advanced instead of Connect.
  3. Enter a free IP address for your network (your current IP with the last number changed, for example 192.168.1.150), your router's address as the gateway, a prefix length of 24, and 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) as DNS 1.
Not comfortable with IP addresses? Changing DNS in the router's own settings page is easier and safer. Look for "DNS" under the internet or WAN settings and enter the same addresses.

Fix 6: Turn off VPN and proxy apps

A VPN app that has lost its connection, or a proxy left over from an old setup, can block all traffic. Open the VPN app and disconnect it, or uninstall it to test. If things work without it, reinstall the VPN or contact its support.

Fix 7: Check router settings that block devices

  • Parental controls or device schedules can block the Fire TV at certain times.
  • MAC address filtering allows only listed devices online. Add the Fire TV's MAC address, shown under Settings › My Fire TV › About › Network.
  • Too many connected devices on older routers can leave new devices without an address. Restarting the router usually clears this.

Fix 8: Try a different connection

Test with your phone's mobile hotspot. If the Fire TV works on the hotspot, the stick is fine and the problem is your home network. An Ethernet adapter is also worth trying, because it removes Wi-Fi from the picture. Our Firestick Ethernet adapter guide shows which adapter fits your stick and how to set it up.

Still not connecting?

If none of these work and the Fire TV cannot connect to any network, including a hotspot, a factory reset is the last step. Our guide to factory resetting a Firestick explains what you lose and how to set up again. Once you are back online, our speed test shows whether the connection is fast enough for streaming.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my phone work on the same Wi-Fi but not the Fire TV?

The two devices may be on different bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), have different DNS settings, or the Fire TV's clock may be wrong. Restarting the Fire TV and checking the date and time fixes most of these.

Will a factory reset fix "no internet"?

Sometimes, but try every other fix first. A reset deletes all apps and settings, and if the cause is your router, the problem will come straight back.

Does a weak signal cause "no internet"?

A very weak signal can make the connection drop in and out, which looks similar. Check the signal on the network status screen. If it shows Weak, see the Wi-Fi band picker and our buffering guide.
