A VPN encrypts your connection and hides your IP address from websites and your internet provider. On a Firestick or Android TV box it is useful for privacy on shared or public Wi-Fi, for stopping your provider from slowing down video, and for reaching your own streaming subscriptions while travelling. It does not make an unlicensed app legal, and it cannot bring back an app that has shut down, such as Live Net TV.

How to install a VPN on a Firestick
- On the Fire TV home screen, choose Find › Search and type the VPN's name.
- Select the app and choose Get. It installs from the Amazon Appstore, so no Downloader or APK is needed.
- Open it, sign in with your account, and choose Quick connect or a nearby server.
- Turn on Connect on startup if you want the VPN active whenever the stick is on.
On Android TV and Google TV, install the same apps from Google Play. Our VPN on Firestick guide covers settings, speed and troubleshooting in more detail.
Will a VPN slow down my streams?
A little: encryption and the extra distance to the server cost some speed. Picking a server close to you keeps the loss small, and on a fast connection you will rarely notice it. Use our VPN speed calculator to estimate your speed with a VPN, and the speed test to check it before and after connecting.
Should I use a free VPN?
Only a trustworthy one. Running a VPN costs money, and many free VPNs pay for it by collecting and selling your browsing data or showing invasive adverts. Proton VPN's free plan is a reputable exception, though it is limited to one device and a handful of countries. Avoid unknown free VPN apps, especially ones offered as APK downloads rather than through the app stores.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best VPN for Firestick?
NordVPN is the best all-rounder, Surfshark is best if you have many devices, ExpressVPN is the easiest to use, and Proton VPN is the best free option and supports the new Vega OS Firesticks.
Do I need a VPN on my Firestick?
Not to use official apps such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer or Pluto TV. A VPN is worth having for privacy, on public Wi-Fi, or if your provider throttles video.
Does a VPN make unofficial streaming apps legal?
No. It hides your connection, not what you watch, and it does not change whether a service has the rights to its content.
Do these VPNs work on the new Vega OS Firestick?
Proton VPN offers a Vega OS app. Check the Amazon Appstore on your stick for the others, since apps for Vega OS are still being released.
Can I try a VPN risk-free?
Yes. All four offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, and Proton VPN also has a permanent free plan.
