What a checksum is
A SHA-256 checksum is a 64-character fingerprint calculated from every byte of a file. Change a single byte, whether by adding adware, cutting a download short or swapping one file for another, and the fingerprint changes completely. If your file's checksum matches the one the publisher lists, you have exactly the file they released.
That makes checksums the most reliable way to confirm an APK is genuine, especially when you have downloaded it from a mirror or received it from someone else.
How to use this tool on a phone or TV
- Android phone: open this page in Chrome, tap Choose an APK file and pick the file from your Downloads folder.
- Computer: drag the APK onto the file box, or click it to browse.
- Fire TV and Android TV: TV browsers rarely allow file picking. Check the file on a phone or computer instead, or use the command-line method below.
Checking without this tool
- Windows:
certutil -hashfile filename.apk SHA256in Command Prompt. - macOS and Linux:
shasum -a 256 filename.apkin Terminal.
A matching checksum proves a file is unmodified, but it says nothing about whether the original is safe. Only trust checksums published by the developer, and see our guide to spotting fake APKs for the other checks worth doing.
