Why "8 GB" is really about 5 GB
The storage on the box includes space taken by the operating system and Amazon's or Google's own apps. On an 8 GB Fire TV Stick, that leaves roughly 5 GB for you. On the 8 GB Chromecast with Google TV, it is closer to 4.5 GB. The planner uses these usable figures, not the number on the box.
Typical sizes used
| Item | Typical size, including data and cache |
|---|---|
| Streaming app | about 350 MB |
| Small utility app (file manager, Downloader) | about 50 MB |
| Game | about 600 MB |
| Leftover APK file | about 40 MB |
Real sizes vary. Some streaming apps grow to well over 500 MB once their cache fills, so treat the result as a guide and leave headroom. If your device is already full, start with our guide to freeing up storage, and see the streaming device finder if it is time for something bigger.
